#19 Transformation des Bestands

At first glance, focusing on existing buildings may seem unprogressive, but it is actually the key to a sustainable future. Our collective knowledge is needed to enable a new approach to the built environment.

In the 2023/24 academic year, the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning is dedicating itself to the transformation of existing buildings. The nineteenth issue of future.lab magazine has taken up this topic and asked colleagues from the faculty for their input.

future.lab magazine#19 offers readers the opportunity to gain an insight into the topic and how it is being addressed at our faculty. Furthermore, the City of Vienna has contributed an interview highlighting the task of existing building stock development as a central future task of urban planning.

This issue of future.lab magazine brings together different voices, perspectives, and positions. We open up the topic and provide food for thought for further discussion, research, and new teaching approaches. It is clear that “transformation of the existing building stock” is not just a focus for this semester, but calls for a much more far-reaching paradigm shift.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue and would like to express our sincere thanks to the authors.
