As part of the mission “Klimaneutrale Stadt” and other programs and initiatives such as New European Bauhaus, comprehensive research activities and accompanying measures are paving the way for sustainable urban change. Developing transformative solutions and anchoring them institutionally requires interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and innovation processes in which social actors are actively involved. Under the principle of participation in research, research programs (such as Open Science, Open Innovation, or Responsible Research and Innovation) as well as (in some cases) novel research approaches and settings (such as co-creation, participatory action research, citizen science, real-world laboratories, urban living labs) and associated processes of reflexive knowledge production are becoming increasingly important.

The symposium of the future.lab Innovationswerkstatt at TU Wien creates a space for discourse on current experiences and findings from participatory research in the context of urban sustainability transformation. In addition to impulses from practice, research, and research funding, the opportunities and challenges of these approaches will be discussed together:

  • What role does participatory and transdisciplinary research play in sustainable urban change?
  • How can relevant forms of knowledge be linked and integrated into the transformation process?
  • How can experiences and findings from participatory research be integrated on a broader social and political level and inspire action?
  • How can the effects of participatory research be better recognized, made visible, and specifically strengthened?
  • What structural conditions are needed to better support participatory research in general?

The event offers insights into current discourses, available resources, and opportunities for networking, as well as an outlook on the formation of strategic alliances to strengthen transdisciplinary and participatory research.

We invite interested actors from science and practice who are working or would like to work on urban transformation towards sustainability to participate.
