Coming to terms: Klimakrise

VU for Architecture and Spatial Planning in the winter semester

Architecture and spatial planning are essential components of human transformation of the Earth. They have been and continue to be driving forces behind the climate crisis. Not only are they directly responsible for the catastrophic CO2 emissions and resource consumption of the construction sector, for the enormous extent of soil sealing and the displacement of people, animals, and plants from their ancestral habitats (to name just a few examples), they also provide the infrastructure for global capitalism, which has been a major cause of this development. Architecture and spatial planning must therefore undergo fundamental change in the face of the climate crisis and other looming crises. They must become part of a new relationship between humans and the world, or help shape it.

In this course, we will therefore examine concepts that propose very different approaches in this context, such as “sustainability,” “resilience,” “circular economy,” “climate justice,” “degrowth,” and “Anthropocene.” With the help of literature and an exploratory examination of case studies, we will look at the concepts in the context of their emergence and critically analyze their use – and thus work out how we can consciously use these terms.
