Field Trips in Public Space #5
BIG THINGS: Public Spaces in 1960s and 1970s Housing Developments
The experimental Field Trips format continues! For the fifth time, students of architecture and spatial planning set out on an expedition, dedicated to engaging with specific aspects of the field of public space.
Together with guest professor Maren Harnack, the thematic focus in the coming semester will be on the public spaces of selected large-scale housing estates of postwar modernism. In addition to the architectural and urban design characteristics of these planning areas, the respective housing and land policy developments will also be addressed.
Specifically, the Field Trips involve the academic preparation, implementation, evaluation, and presentation of a research journey. Student groups will each focus on one housing estate—developing research questions and methodology, engaging with relevant theory, and establishing contact with (local) experts—in order to embark on a multi-day research trip in May 2020.
The expedition destinations are selected housing estates in:
London / Sheffield (GBR)
Genoa / Rome (ITA)
Amsterdam (NDL) / Brussels (BEL)
Split (CRO) / Skopje (MKD)
