The single-family home
The central focus of the course is the single-family house. Throughout the semester, we will engage intensively with the various (spatial planning–related) aspects surrounding this housing type and the “dream of the single-family house.” This includes its past, present, and future; its challenges and problems; advantages and disadvantages; possible alternatives; and its representation in the media. Personal experiences and attitudes toward this polarizing topic will also be explored and reflected upon.
THE SINGLE-FAMILY HOUSE
FOUNDATION: Everything You Need to Know
In the first step (Assignment 1), students will compile key figures, data, and facts about the single-family house. This includes, for example, land consumption, the number of houses in Austria, average number of residents, regulatory mechanisms, planning and steering instruments, historical development, and more.
FLOOR: The House and Its Residents
In the second step (Assignment 2), students will explore their personal environment in relation to the topic. Guiding questions will be developed together, and a preparatory workshop (methods, input, etc.) will be conducted.
ROOF: Looking Toward the Future
At the end of the semester, the results of both parts will be presented in a small exhibition.
During the semester, two one-day excursions are planned (depending on the COVID situation). Participation is voluntary.
Lecturers: Barbara Steinbrunner, Isabel Stumfol, Lena Schartmüller
