Urban composition of the southern district of Favoriten
Similar to a musical composition, the city can be understood as a symbiosis of different instruments or actors in order to be livable, affordable, and sustainable.
Who and what are needed to allow for harmony as well as dissonance? What fields of tension emerge, and how can different uses lead to diversity and urbanity? In the south of Vienna, the course explores how affordable and urban living and urban space can be developed through the involvement of various actors in the process. In Vienna South Favoriten, experimentation and design will contribute to Vienna’s ongoing debate on affordable housing.
A key focus of the design studio lies in the collaborative work of different stakeholders. The City of Vienna therefore acts as a central cooperation partner in the course and facilitates networking with relevant actors. In the lecture series accompanying the design studio—organized in collaboration with the lecture series “Zukunft Stadt”—numerous representatives of urban planning will present insights from their daily planning practice and engage in discussion with one another and with the students.
