#11 Beyond Asphalt: Public Space, Ecology & Co-Production
Under the title “Beyond Asphalt: Public Space, Ecology & Co-Production,” Susann Ahn (Landscape) and Sabine Knierbein (raum urban) – as part of a recording of the public event ZUKUNFT STADT on April 17, 2024 – speak with Cordula Loidl-Reisch (TU Berlin, emerita), Markus Reiter (7th District, Neubau, Vienna), Eva Schwab (TU Graz), and Daniel Zimmermann (3:0 Landschaftsarchitektur). They explore how we can achieve an expanded understanding of building stock transformation and how planning must succeed in integrating public space with the need for green and blue infrastructures.
Susann Ahn is a landscape architect, urban planner, and licensed mediator. She received her diploma from TU Munich and her doctorate from ETH Zurich. She is the founder of Ahn Landscape Mediation, a planning office specializing in the interface of landscape architecture and communication. She is also a partner at adribo Conflict Management. In her research, teaching, and practice, she focuses on the connection between landscape architecture and communication, particularly on participatory, conflict-resolving, and co-creative methods to promote integrated planning and design processes. In addition to her academic work, publications, and design projects, she works as an expert in public workshops, juries, and committees. Since 2021, she has co-led the Professorship of Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning at the Institute for Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Design at TU Wien together with Thomas E. Hauck.

Sabine Knierbein is Associate Professor of Urban Culture and Public Space with a Venia in International Urbanism at the faculty and leads the Research Unit for Urban Culture and Public Space (FOB URBAN) at the Institute of Spatial Planning, TU Wien.

Cordula Loidl-Reisch studied “Landscape Design and Ecology” at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences and TU Wien and held teaching positions at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and TU Wien. Until 2006, she ran her own ZT landscape architecture office in Vienna, focusing on the design of open spaces in dense urban and historic contexts. From 2006 to 2020, she was a university professor at TU Berlin, where she headed the department of Landscape Construction–Object Design / Landscape Architecture at ILAUP. She serves as a juror for numerous competitions, a design advisor in Freising/Bavaria and the Hanseatic City of Rostock, and is Vice President of the Austrian Horticultural Society.
Markus Reiter has been district mayor of Vienna’s 7th district Neubau for the Green Party since 2017. He is also a socio-economist and co-founder of the social organization neunerhaus.

Eva Schwab, PhD, is an assistant professor and deputy head of the Institute for Urban Design at TU Graz, Austria. She is a trained landscape architect and earned her doctorate at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna. Her dissertation was awarded the 2016 Dissertation Prize of Landscape Research and the Talent Prize of the City of Vienna. Her book Spatial Justice and Informal Settlements was published by Emerald (2018). Her research focuses on public space politics, its production and use, and includes work on informal settlements, urban agriculture, migration and diversity, as well as contemporary urban and rural development.

Daniel Zimmermann founded 3:0 Landschaftsarchitektur in 2000 with two partners. The office specializes in public projects, designing large urban open spaces such as parks, plazas, and streets with a focus on trees. In recent years, adaptation to climate change has become a key focus. He is a founding member of the Working Group “Sponge City” (1998), a member of ÖGLA (Austrian Society for Landscape Architecture), IG Architektur, and ÖGHG (Austrian Society for Historical Gardens), and a sought-after speaker at architecture/landscape/climate conferences. In 2019, he founded the interdisciplinary cooperation network “cuulbox” with his office, together with transport planners from con.sens and climatologists from Weatherpark, to develop and promote concrete measures for climate adaptation in public space and urban planning. He is also co-initiator of “KlimaKonkret.”
