#19 FOCUS ON SOIL: What is soil and how can we protect it?

In episode 19, Barbara Steinbrunner speaks with Andreas Baumgarten, President of the Austrian Soil Science Society (ÖBG) and staff member at the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES); Hans-Peter Haslmayr, also staff at the ÖBG and AGES; and Arthur Kanonier, Head of the Research Unit for Soil Policy and Soil Management, about the sustainable use of soil as a resource, why and how it must be protected, and the implications this has for sustainable spatial planning. The conversation also addresses the challenges that future planners will face.

This episode is the first part of the series Soil in Focus. Over the course of the third season, we look forward to more episodes with Barbara Steinbrunner and exciting discussions on soil policy and protection.

Andreas Baumgarten is President of the Austrian Soil Science Society (ÖBG). He also works at the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), focusing on soil and plant nutrition as well as soil health.

Hans-Peter Haslmayr is a staff member at the ÖBG and AGES, where he works on national and international scientific projects. In addition, he is an independent soil scientist, consultant, and expert for private clients, public authorities, and courts, and serves as a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.

Arthur Kanonier has been a professor and head of the Soil Policy and Soil Management research unit at TU Wien for ten years. He has long conducted research on soil policy as well as soil and spatial planning law and is the author of numerous publications.

Barbara Steinbrunner studied spatial planning and is currently a university assistant at the Soil Policy and Soil Management research unit at the Institute of Spatial Planning at TU Wien.
