#22 FOCUS ON SOIL: How can awareness be raised in the context of soil protection?

Barbara Steinbrunner speaks with her guests Barbara Birli, Elias Grinzinger, Josef Ramharter, and Nina Sillipp about the dimensions of awareness-raising in the context of soil protection. In the third episode of the miniseries SOIL IN FOCUS, representatives from politics, research, and practice share their experiences with new tools and methods, including the results of the Soil Walks research project by TU Wien in collaboration with the Austrian Environment Agency and Wallenberger & Linhard Regional Consulting KG, which is funded under the departmental research program via dafne.at with support from the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Regions, and Water Management.

Josef Ramharter has been the mayor of the city of Waidhofen an der Thaya since June 2021. After completing his Matura at the Handelsakademie Waidhofen an der Thaya, he spent 25 years in the construction industry (commercial management of a construction company with around 200 employees), followed by 6 years as sales director in a wood-processing company.

DI Dr. Barbara Birli is an expert in soil and land management at the Austrian Environment Agency. She focuses on soil in environmental impact assessments, soil hazards, and systematic decision support for land use. She leads and participates in national and international projects. Citizen science projects and environmental education on soil and land management are of particular importance to her.

Mag. Nina Sillipp studied spatial research and spatial planning with a focus on regional development at the Institute of Geography and Regional Research at the University of Vienna. Since 2006, she has worked at Wallenberger & Linhard Regional Consulting in Horn (Lower Austria). Her work includes location marketing and vacancy management, and she is responsible for the Municipal Location Information System (KOMSIS), a vacancy database for municipalities in Austria to record, process, and market available properties.

DI Elias Grinzinger studied spatial planning at TU Wien. He works and conducts research in the fields of town center revitalization, vacancy activation, energy and mobility transitions, awareness-raising, and digital tools at the Research Area for Regional Planning and Regional Development at TU Wien. His diploma thesis focused on the WebGIS-supported recording and communication of supra-local planning.
