#23 "The world is built!"* Design theory on an urban planning scale

How is design education in urban planning changing in the face of growing ecological, social, and economic challenges? In this episode, we speak with Nela Kadić and Dorothee Huber from the Research Area for Urban Design about the transformation in teaching, research, and practice – from the classic masterplan to flexible, context-sensitive planning in existing urban structures.

With a particular focus on the role of analysis, communication, and collaboration, this episode tells the story of everyday life in design education – balancing creative freedom, structural challenges, and a clear goal: empowering the next generation of planners to take responsibility.

Dorothee Huber is a University Assistant at TU Wien in the Research Area for Urban Design and Urbanism. Her work is strongly rooted in the urban context and addresses urban phenomena related to mixed-use development, social inclusion, and production environments.

Nela Kadić is a Senior Lecturer in the Research Area for Urban Design and Urbanism with a focus on urbanism in Southeast Europe. For her dissertation, she is currently researching territorial urbanization along railway landscapes in the Western Balkans.
