#25 Thinking about educational spaces based on existing buildings

In episode #25, we speak with Karin Harather and Renate Stuefer from the Drawing and Visual Languages research area, as well as Carla Schwaderer from the Building Design and Architecture research area, about the central role of real-world laboratories in the transformation of existing, and in particular educational, spaces. The focus is especially on the question of how existing buildings can be adapted to current pedagogical and societal requirements through small interventions, and what added value the collaborative artistic-creative design process brings to students, pupils, educators, and other experts.

Karin Harather is an artist, holds a PhD in craft education, and is an assistant professor at the Institute for Art and Design 1 at TU Wien. As part of her artistic spatial research and teaching, she initiates co-creative processes, develops 1:1 test settings, and real-world laboratories in existing buildings.

Carla Schwaderer, after her studies in architecture at TU Wien and in socially-oriented social work, works as a socially-oriented architect in various (research) projects. She deals with the perception, use, and needs of space by minorities within the framework of participatory design and gender-related empowerment processes.

Renate Stuefer is a trained architect, architecture educator, and mother of seven children. She teaches and researches at the Institute for Art and Design 1 at TU Wien on research and project topics such as learning environments and building materials for active, self-determined learning processes.
