#29 Territorial Inequalities – An Intersectional Perspective
Based on the EU-funded research project EXIT, in Episode #29 Larissa Benk and Lisa-Marie Kramer speak with Adrienne Homberger, Slađana Adamović, and Daniele Karasz from the Department of Sociology about their current research on sustainable strategies to address territorial inequalities.
Together, they critically examine the concept of “left behind places” and approach it with a differentiated, intersectional research perspective. The episode provides insights from their ethnographic work in Austrian regions around Ternitz (Lower Austria) and Jennersdorf (Burgenland). One clear takeaway emerges: effectively addressing territorial inequalities requires viewing the built environment not only in spatial and physical terms but, above all, socially—as a network of relationships, experiences, and local resources.
Adrienne Homberger is a cultural and social scientist and has been working at the Department of Sociology at TU Wien since 2021. She is currently a project associate in the EXIT project. Her research focuses on social and territorial inequality, precarity, flight and migration, as well as racism and gender.
Slađana Adamović is a cultural and social anthropologist (University of Vienna) and social science researcher. She is currently a pre-doc at the Department of Sociology within the research project Identity in the Context of War and Migration. Her work focuses on intersectional migration and gender research. She previously worked as a research project assistant at the Department of Spatial Planning at TU Wien for the EXIT project.
Daniele Karasz works primarily on topics related to migration, housing, and urban development. His research emphasizes the intersection of anthropological expertise with planning-oriented disciplines. He is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Cultural and Social Anthropology at the University of Vienna and coordinates the EXIT project at the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning, TU Wien. Daniele Karasz is also co-founder of Search and Shape – Institute for Applied Social Science in Vienna.
