#40 Fokus Radfahren: Radfahren im urbanen Kontext

What role does the bicycle play in today’s cities? Is it merely a mode of transportation, or is it also a reflection of social developments, political negotiations, and spatial transformations? This episode kicks off a miniseries on the topic of “cycling,” curated by Madlyn Miessgang, Florian Pühringer, and Kurt Weninger as part of the TU-wide initiative cycleFIT.

In this discussion, Mathias Mitteregger (MURA Mobility and Space), Corinna Mölkner (BOKU Vienna), and Lorenz Siegel (Vienna Mobility Agency) discuss with Madlyn Miessgang and Kurt Weninger the historical development of the bicycle, its significance for social participation and self-determined mobility, as well as the challenges and potential of bicycle-friendly urban development—always with a focus on Vienna. The discussion will address issues of infrastructure, safety, and spatial distribution, as well as social attributions, gender equality, and international models of successful cycling policy.

Mathias Mitteregger is a mobility and urban planner and the founder of MURA Mobilität und Raum. Previously, he worked at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) in fields including architectural theory, mobility research, and urban development. His work focuses on the social, cultural, and spatial dimensions of mobility, as well as on the transformation processes of sustainable urban development.

Corinna Mölkner is a human geographer and research associate at the Institute of Transportation at BOKU Vienna. In the TRANSFORM research project, she investigates the social dimensions of the transportation transition. Previously, she worked for several years in municipal pedestrian and bicycle transportation promotion in Germany and supported participatory and planning processes in the field of sustainable mobility.

Lorenz Siegel is a landscape planner at the Vienna Mobility Agency, where he coordinates projects related to walking and cycling for the City of Vienna. Previously, he spent ten years as a project manager at Copenhagenize in Copenhagen and Montreal, supporting cities worldwide in developing bicycle-friendly mobility strategies and infrastructure measures.

Madlyn Miessgang works in the field of architecture, urban planning, and science communication at the future.lab of the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning at TU Wien. She is part of the cycleFIT team and supports the initiative in the areas of outreach and visual communication.
