Karin Harather and Emanuela Semlitsch discuss with Karoline Iber, Robert Temel, Lena Rücker, and Hans Jörg Ulreich the challenges of interim uses in light of the need for long-term perspectives for a broad cultural and educational offering in the city of Vienna.

Karin Harather is a researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning at the Institute for Art and Design at TU Wien. She leads the FFG project BiB-Lab, an innovation lab for educational spaces in motion, developed and operated by a multidisciplinary team in the Per-Albin-Hanson-Siedlung-Ost in Vienna’s 10th district.

Emanuela Semlitsch is a researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning at the Research Unit of Local Spatial Planning at TU Wien. Her research focuses primarily on understanding the city and its public spaces as educational environments.

Karoline Iber is the managing director of the Universität Wien Kinderbüro. Under the name DOCK, located in the Zaha Hadid building at Spittelauer Lände on the Vienna Danube Canal, she has created a space for future-oriented questions and co-creation for children and young people, providing room for their own ideas.

Lena Rücker is a spatial planner working at MA 18, the Municipal Department for Urban Development and Planning. Her work focuses primarily on interim and multiple uses as well as the activation of vacant properties.

Robert Temel is an independent architecture and urban researcher and consultant in Vienna. He focuses on interim, adaptive, and subsequent uses from the perspective of urban development and housing.

Hans Jörg Ulreich is a trained business economist, has been active in the real estate sector since 1992, and has been self-employed in the field for 25 years.
