#8 Neue Herausforderungen brauchen neue Kompetenzen
Hans Kramar and Inge Manka speak with graduates and students from Architecture and Spatial Planning – Hannah Niemand, Lisa Steiner, Martin Aufhauser, and Fedora Herzog – about why a new understanding of planning is needed, especially in education, and how we can take responsibility to enable a transformation toward a sustainable approach to the built environment.

Hans Kramar is a certified spatial planner and holds a doctorate in regional studies. He works as a Senior Scientist at the Research Unit for Urban and Regional Research. In his role as chair of the Study Commission for Spatial Planning, he is heavily involved in the design and development of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Spatial Planning at TU Wien.

Inge Manka is a licensed architect with a doctorate and works as a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Art and Design 1 at TU Wien. Since 2023, she has chaired the Study Commission for Architecture and Building Sciences & Environment. As a member of the queer-feminist collective CLAIMING*SPACES, she is particularly committed to addressing urgent issues of equality and intersectionality in teaching and research.

Martin Aufhauser is a Master’s student in Spatial Planning and Spatial Development and serves as a student representative on the Study Commission for Spatial Planning. His studies focus heavily on the development of existing buildings, both in design projects and in his personal interests.

Fedora Herzog is a Master’s student in Architecture and was long a student representative on the Study Commission for Architecture. In her Master’s studies, she has taken numerous courses related to “building stock development” and has a personal interest in this field.

Hannah Niemand studied Architecture and Spatial Planning until 2020 in Weimar, Santiago de Chile, and Vienna. In addition to her experience as an architect at GABU Heindl Architektur, she has expanded her perspective through her work with the collective Raumstation.

Lisa Steiner studied Spatial Planning at TU Wien. During her studies, she focused particularly on the user-driven reuse of vacant buildings in rural areas for her Master’s thesis, addressing the transformation of existing buildings. In her professional work at the office nonconform, dealing with existing buildings and, in particular, revitalizing town centers, plays a central role.
