The book “AVENUE21. Planning and Policy Considerations for an Age of Automated Mobility” examines the impact of increasing automation and connectivity in road transport on urban and settlement development and the design of public spaces. The aim of the interdisciplinary research project was to develop different perspectives on the possible effects of automated mobility and to examine how these can contribute to sustainable settlement and mobility development.

The book emphasizes the importance of a locally specific and differentiated approach in order to respond to the challenges of automated mobility. It calls for consistent control on the part of policymakers and planning authorities in order to create a framework that is geared toward the common good and at the same time flexible enough to accommodate new technologies.

The book provides insights into international examples of the application of automated mobility and discusses the potential and necessity of controlling it. It is the result of a four-year research project funded by the Daimler and Benz Foundation and carried out by an interdisciplinary team at TU Wien. The book aims to advance the discussion about the future of mobility and contribute to other disciplines.
