The course addresses key challenges of current housing policy in Europe, with a particular focus on inequalities in access to affordable and adequate housing. Drawing on the EU-funded research project ReHousIn, students analyze how economic shifts and climate policy measures, among other factors, influence housing provision in Austria and in European comparison. Hybrid lectures by international project partners (from Austria, Italy, Norway, and others) shed light on different national and local contexts. Mechanisms of housing subsidies, socio-ecological transformation, and housing policy tensions are discussed in an interdisciplinary manner.

To deepen the theoretical content, students work on local case studies in Vienna, particularly within the field of subsidized housing and urban renewal. These case studies focus on analyzing concrete implementation strategies, governance structures, and local challenges. In doing so, students engage with current developments in Vienna that are also being examined in the ReHousIn project. The aim is to develop a well-founded understanding of the complex interconnections between housing policy, social inclusion, and ecological transformation, and to independently prepare these insights in the form of presentations and reflections.
