2.2 Application

In this section, you will find information about the necessary application to a qualified and authorized faculty member for the supervision of your doctoral thesis. The following overview of all institutes, research areas, and authorized faculty members is intended to facilitate finding a supervisor for your doctoral thesis.

Entry requirements

In order to be admitted to the doctoral studies at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, the following are required:

  • The fulfilment of study requirements for admission to the doctoral programme of the TU Wien. See study requirements.
  • A request for supervision addressed to a professor or Privatdozent at the Faculty who is qualified to supervise doctoral thesis, together with their consent.

Detailed information on entry requirements for a doctoral degree: 2.1 Admission

Application involving an individual doctoral thesis topic

No doctoral thesis topics are advertised at the faculty. The standard format is an individual doctoral thesis. The selection of an appropriate supervisor therefore plays an important role. Use the overview below to find a faculty member whom you expect to have the greatest expertise regarding your research project. The planned thesis must thematically match the research priorities of this person and their research unit at the faculty.

Apply by email directly to the selected individuals from the overview below whose expertise best aligns with your doctoral thesis project. The following documents are required for the application: a CV, a motivation letter, and a research proposal. The research proposal should be 3-10 pages long and address, among other things, the content of the research project and its relevance to the supervisor’s research area. It should include the working title, context, research question and working hypothesis, research approach and methods, timeline, monograph or cumulative doctoral thesis, as well as relevant literature.

Qualified supervisors

At the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, over 50 professors and Privatdozent_innen are qualified to supervise doctoral thesis. They are active in a total of 29 research units assigned to 6 institutes. Three groups of academics may supervise doctoral thesis: ‘appointed’ professors (Univ.-Prof.), professors with Habilitation (Ao.Univ.-Prof. and Associate Prof.) and  Privatdozent_innen (Priv.Doz.). (The Habilitation is the highest-ranking academic qualification obtaining the authorization to teach independently in a specific subject area (Venia Legendi).

The overview below presents the faculty’s institutes, together with their research units and, for each of these, the relevant qualified professors and  Privatdozent_innen. As regards specific research priorities and contact options, please make use of the link that leads to TISS — the TU Wien Information Systems & Services.
