5.1 Services and grants

In this section, you will find information on services offered by the TU Wien’s Human Resources Development Department. Financial support and scholarships are provided by the Faculty and TU as well as by external bodies. Doctoral student networking is also mentioned. Depending on whether a doctoral candidate has been given employment, and which type, different regulations will apply with regard to access to services and funding.

The TU Wien offers internal training courses to employees such as pre-docs and project assistants on the following topics: authorship, research evaluation, academic profiles, open access and Creative Commons licenses, and predatory publishing. Courses are listed in the Internal Training Programme Catalogue of TU Wien. Doctoral students who are not employed by the TU Wien can make use of remaining places. The TU Wien's Human Resources Development Department provides the following information and services to new employees as a form of onboarding. Information and services on can be found here. Within the framework of workplace health promotion of the TU Wien, there are preventive, psychological, and medical services as well as sports activities.

TU Wien Doctoral School Peer2Peer Mentorship Programme
From autumn 2024, the TU Wien's Doctoral School will enable freshly enrolled doctoral candidates to receive support from more advanced postgraduates. This is to foster academic encouragement, personal development, and social integration. The programme can be followed for a maximum of one year. Financial support

Grants for the participation of doctoral students in conferences
The TU Wien offers funding for international conference participation by doctoral students, whether employed by the TU or not. If a personal contribution, such as a poster presentation or a paper, is demonstrably made at the event, travel, accommodation, and conference costs will be refunded. Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis: please apply by 15 January, 15 March, 15 June, or 15 October.

Promoting doctoral student mobility
The TU Wien offers various funding programmes and international mobility programmes.

Travel allowance for TU Wien employees
For international travel to initiate or continue research and educational collaborations with universities that do not have partnership agreements with TU Wien, TU Wien covers travel and accommodation costs under predefined conditions. Applications may be submitted 6 months to 3 weeks in advance to SAP Services.

Funding for stays abroad, conferences, and publications in connection with TU research priority ‘energy and the environment’
The Lions Club Wien St. Stephan provides an annual grant of €4,000 for TU Wien doctoral students. The funding is intended to foster study stays abroad, participation in academic conferences both at home and abroad, and scientific publications. Applications are processed by the . DOC scholarship for the promotion of highly qualified doctoral students
The DOC doctoral programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences provides support to highly qualified doctoral candidates. Prerequisites are: completion of a master's/diploma degree less than 2 years ; a proposal; and a letter of recommendation from the supervisor.

Intrapreneurship and Entrepreneurship Programme

The TU Wien's Innovation Incubation Centre offers the following to TU Wien students: training; and a network for budding entrepreneurs, business developers and/or innovation managers. Please apply if you wish to increase the marketability of your research results, pursue an entrepreneurial path in the field of innovation, or acquire business skills. A limited number of students will be accepted into the part-time programme, which also includes mentoring by experts. More information can be found here: ESI Extend Study on Innovation.

Networks

The Fachschaft Doktorat (doctoral student union) of the TU Wien represents the interests of doctoral students, takes action in committees, provides support and advice regarding study and research matters, and organizes workshops and social events. It also organizes orientation programmes and parties for new doctoral students. Additionally, at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, the twice-yearly doctoral colloquia offer an opportunity to exchange ideas and network. There is also a ‘regulars' table’ for doctoral students doing spatial planning research.
